NBA can be a cruel world. The passing of time can happen to a player, to a coach, or to a team. However, the impact is often felt long before they realize that it is already going on. This is the case that happened to Derrick Rose.

DERRICK ROSE: AN OVERVIEW

Six years ago, Derrick Rose was the toast of the league. He was the player who became the youngest most valuable player in the NBA history. He was also regarded to be one of the players in the Chicago Bulls against different players like Dwayne Wade and LeBron James and also for the Miami Heat for several seasons.

However, the real case did not happen long for Rose. If someone had informed him that the NBA was in the middle of a lockout, Rose would not be signing the veteran’s minimum six years after.

Derrick Rose will be teammates with LeBron James next season after agreeing to deal for the veteran’s minimum with Cleveland Cavaliers. As reported by The Washington Post, Rose will be completing a stunning career arc over these past six seasons.

THE LOCKOUT

During the lockout in 2011, the “Derrick Rose Rule” became a part of the NBA. This is the rule that allowed the Chicago Bulls to pay Rose at 30% of the salary cap during a five-year max contract.

When he signed the deal in December 2011, the contract paid him at least $94 Million for five years. The contract expired on July 1.

However, things were no longer in odds. According to Sports Illustrated, the next contract Rose signed for will pay him a total of $2.1 Million for a year.

The contract became an accurate reflection of the market value and the interest of people with Derrick Rose. This is in spite of his name and his stat line during his stint with New York Knicks.

During the last season, he was able to score 18.0 points with 4.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds. Even if these numbers are respectable, it still hides the fact that Rose cannot replicate the kind of magic he got during the early years of his career.

DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PLAYERS

The thing that made Derrick Rose different from other players is his remarkable athleticism. He was a brilliant and unique player who had an explosion with the ball.

He can change his directions at will and even in the blink of an eye. However, after several knee injuries, which includes two back-to-back that caused him to be out for two seasons and three straight playoff runs with Chicago Bulls, he cannot burst just as before.

Without his athleticism, how can he manage to be a play maker on a team like Cleveland? With the newly installed Koby Altman as the new General Manager and the news of Kyrie Irving in a trade, will Cleveland manage to be the king of the ring?

One thing that Derrick Rose can do is to attack the basket. He can come in and create baskets once LeBron James is on the bench. With a team loaded with shooting, there is plenty of room for Rose to operate.
