BUENA VISTA TOWNSHIP – A 29-year-old Millville man, armed with a knife and bat and threatening to harm himself, was arrested Saturday after police worked slow and steady to subdue him before taking him into custody.
Just after 3:30 p.m., N.J. State Police responded to the 4900 block of East Landis Avenue, near Union Road, for a well-being check on a distressed man in the area of his ex-wife’s home.
The man, apparently suicidal, was identified of Paul Letizia of Millville, according to state police.
Letizia walked around the area, headed over to the East Vineland Volunteer Fire Company firehouse where he entered a parked vehicle and began to toss items from the inside, police said.
Vineland police responded as backup as Letizia walked out into a field.
Investigators were able to use pepper spray and handcuff Letizia to take him into custody without anyone being injured. Letizia was taken to Inspira Medical Center Vineland, where he was treated for the pepper spray, and then to Atlantic County Jail.
Letizia was charged with four weapons offenses, terroristic threats, burglary and criminal mischief.
He also was charged with assault after allegedly striking an elder family member, who had driven him to the area, twice with a bat, police said.
